Reflective Activity for Pupils - The School Environment
Introduction
A healthy and inclusive school school enables children’s well-being by providing positive learning environments to achieve a climate of inclusion and equality. The school should promote positive interaction and behaviour in order to create a fair, just and respectful environment where everyone feels valued and where pupils can flourish.
This reflective activity engages pupils in the process of self-evaluation. It will assist in identifying perceptions of the school environment in relation to accessibility, learning within the community, pupil privacy and safety, consultation and planning for improvement, waste management, school and community play areas, road safety and school maintenance.
This reflective activity will:
• assist in evaluating pupils’ perceptions and experiences of the school environment
• develop an understanding of the importance of engaging with pupils in assessing their learning environments
• identify areas for improvement which will enhance the well-being of pupils and promote better learning
You should decide what format you will use to deliver this activity. If you choose to engage pupils in a survey please use the following steps:
1. Where possible the activity should be distributed to ALL pupils, or at least a large representative sample from each year group, as this will provide a more credible reflection and assessment of views.
2. Once the data has been collected it should be collated and analysed. The findings can then be used to inform the school improvement plan. 3. Schools should decide how they will process the data collected and how they will inform all school staff and community members of the findings.
The survey format is designed to protect the respondent’s privacy providing confidentiality and anonymity.
